We often talk of solitary pursuits, e.g., writing and art-making require much alone time and are often pursued by people who like to be alone with their thoughts; such people are said to be solitary, or to enjoy the solitude of the studio. When used as adjectives, lonely means unhappy because of feeling isolated from contact with other people, whereas solitary means living or being by oneself.
